Food Allergy

Food Allergy

How do you know you have it?

A symptom of an allergy is hives: itchy red spots all over your body.
Swollen lips and tongue.
Sometimes allergies can cause breathing problems.

How is an allergy treated?

If you think you have an allergy, you will probably have to do a blood test to be sure.
But in the meantime, don't eat the food you think you are allergic to. You may have to take an allergy medicine to help with the itching.

What should you do?

Once you know what you're allergic to, you have to be very careful to avoid those foods. You have to tell the places you go to a lot, such as, school and restaurants, that you have a food allergy so they can avoid giving you those foods.
Allergies can last a few years or forever. You can go back to the doctor from time to time to do the blood test again to see if you still have an allergy.

And remember, always ask your doctor!
