Drowning

Drowning

How should you act?

1. Call an ambulance urgently.
2. Ensure the mouth and nose are clear.
3. Perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR): heart massage and mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.

4. If resuscitation hasn't worked by the time the ambulance arrives, a defibrillator might be needed.
5. If the patient is breathing, place them in the recovery position: lying on their side to prevent choking on their tongue or vomit.

Safety tips

Children who can't swim should wear a life jacket.
Taking swimming lessons during the year is a good idea.
There should always be an adult supervising young children.
Building a small fence around the pool that's closed when not in use is recommended.

And remember, always ask your doctor!
